Choose the Mind Set That Frees You
Have you ever thought about why you do what you do?
Have you ever wanted to do something or to try something new? But you just couldn’t bring yourself to do it? Like maybe public speaking or joining a new club or even just asking for what you need from someone else.
Have you ever caught yourself turning down an opportunity saying “Oh I could never do that!” or “That doesn’t interest me!” or saying “that won’t work!” to some new suggestion without even stopping to really think about if it will or not?
Or inversely, have you ever caught yourself doing something that you promised yourself you would never do or promised yourself that you would stop doing? Like smoking or eating junk food or saying “yes” when you should have said “no” to someone else’s demands and expectations. [Read more →]

Are You Losing the Time Management Battle?
Does your life sometimes feel like there’s just too much to do and not enough time to do it in?
Can it sometimes feel like you are trying to keep 10 or more plates spinning on the end of very long wobbly poles, like some circus act.
In the work place people are reporting that they are trying to cope with an ever growing “To Do” list with tighter and tight time frames and smaller and smaller budgets, while also trying to balance the very real demands of family and relationships
Especially in the current climate, where people are being made redundant or resigning and not being replaced.
So more and more, is being asked to be done by fewer and fewer people.
Now you could argue that there is less to be done, and that’s why people are being made redundant or aren’t being replaced, but that doesn’t seem to be true in every case.
Aside from that, on investigation, a couple of common issues generally start to appear.
Firstly. How to cope with the growing expectations of other people? (Your boss, staff, customers and even family)
Secondly. Is how to cope with your own feelings & expectations? If you expect yourself to do it all your self (Mums are good at this, I respectfully call it the superwomen syndrome), not wanting to let anyone down, feel guilty for not coping or inversely resenting the added obligations.
Thirdly. Is how to see the wood from the trees, in other words “What’s Important & relevant” vs “What’s not as important or maybe even relevant”
All over shadowed by a very real sense of overwhelm or impending doom.
The “Oh my god, where do I start!” feeling.
Most people might agree that it’s pretty hard to think clearly when it feels like you haven’t even got time to pause.
However there is a solution to this very common challenge that enables the user to enjoy real relief, improve the quality of their life and do so in a sustainable way.
Take a look at one of our earlier blog posts entitled “Achieve the Things that are Important to You,” in particular the part that explains Chapter Six of the Go For Gold, Goal Setting that Really Works Program, which is all about “Proven ways of Leveraging Time and how to enjoy true quality of life”.

Swine Flu. A Wolf at the Door - Mountain out of a Mole Hill or Opportunity for Profit?
Up until the last 7 days there has been a global storm ravaging our planet, which appears to have quiet suddenly disappeared.
Mexico City brought to a stand still (and for good reason). L.A. a State of Emergency declared. In Egypt, 1000’s of pigs ordered to be killed sparking a civil uprising. In China; indeed in many Countries airports, perfectly healthy people were being detained in fear that they may be infected.
Certainly there have been deaths, and we pray for them and their families. Certainly we feel discomforted by the potential for yet another serious global threat. Certainly I felt comforted by seeing the Authorities taking decisive and prudent actions to protect their people.
Whether Swine Flu is or was a real global threat, I don’t know.
The answer too many questions are often only clear in hindsight.
What many did find disquieting were the number of Civil, Business and Political faces that appeared within minutes of this event being born. Who it appeared, took action not for the good of their people, not for the good of their country. But rather took action for the good of their own agendas.
Some of these voices were loud and seemingly authoritative, some stalked quietly through the corridors of decision. Never the less they were transparently motivated by personal gain.
I’m sure that it’s obvious to you as it is obvious to many that Leaders who rally a population to a common cause for the good of the whole, come from a totally different level of values than the Leader who incites a population for pure self interest.
Post event we could claim moral outrage or ignore them and let it pass. Or we could confront and demand accountability or some other course. But that’s not really my question.
My question is who did you follow? The Calmer, or the Catastrophiser. The Meddler. The Profiteer, or the voice of reason.
The leaders who show courage and good judgment.
Or the ones inciting blame rage and fear.
Can you see that it’s not just what they do that’s important; it’s what we do that tips the balance.
There are lessons for us here. There are choices we can make for the future.
And those lessons and choices are not just about how to better handle potential crisis. But also lessons about whom we trust to follow. Do we follow those that give us the thrill of fear or those that help us to be better people?
To some the thrill of the rollercoaster will always be more exciting than the value of doing the right thing.
The difference of course between a rollercoaster and a manipulator, is that you can always get off a rollercoaster.
The History of many Nations screams at us that it is not so easy to escape the latter.
I believe that we need to be vigilant to the potential for threats of any kind. Be it disease, terrorism war manipulation or monopoly. Not so paranoid that we pull the trigger on innocence and not so accustomed to the “wolfs” cry that we ignore the Wolfs scent.
Just being sensible if that’s possible.
In my view the world needs more great men and women and it is my belief that that potential lies within every man and woman.

Does the media feed your fear?
warning: comic profanity at bottom – read no further if small fluffy cartoon characters blaspheming offends you…..
One of the philosophies I like to live by is to minimise on the amount of “negative” input in the form of main stream media.
If we all spent our time worrying about all the things that the press so freely share as being the “current events” - we would
never try new things, take risks or even leave our homes for fear of the worst….
Much of what we see today has already happened to (some of us baby boomer types at least) earlier in our life times and certainly in the time of our forefathers, parents and grand parents - the press has very short memories - I guess there would be little news if they could point to the pattern of “oh this is just like what happened back when……”
For instance - one fact the press has yet to report on (that I’m aware of at least because I don’t watch that much….. ;-)…. is the fact that during the great depression of the 1930’s more millionaires were made than any other time in that hundred year period. In markets like that (and now…) opportunity abounds!
Another fine example - the current “swine flu” pandemic that everyone is getting all het up about - is pretty much the same scenario we had in 1977. The world did not end, millions did not die and once again the resilence of the human race (let alone our ingenuity, scientific ability etc) came to the fore….
Here’s an interesting video from Congressman Ron Paul that discusses how history is repeating itself in this regards.
“>Another view on the recent swine flu
and, as an added bonus, here’s something that made me laugh earlier today…. a different view also on our childhood favourite, winnie the pooh!

Does winnie the poo believe in the swine flu?

Talking ourselves “Into or Out of” it!
Someone once said that most problems in life, talk back. In other words, most of our problems are to do with other people.
But I think that most of the problems we have in life, start earlier than that, I think they start with the conversations that we have with ourselves, in our minds.
And that what we experience in the outside world is largely a reflection of what is happening inside ourselves.
We look out at the world and we talk to ourselves about what we see. We sit inside of ourselves & we chat to ourselves about everything; what we like, what we dislike what we agree with or disagree with; you might be sitting out there now, doing exactly that, about everything I’ve written here.
And the quality of those conversations, will colour our decisions.
It’s been estimated that people talk to themselves at about 450 words per minute.
And that the average vocabulary is between 50 to 100 commonly used words.
The conversations that people have with each other are generally edited versions of what they say to themselves. People are generally much blunter and harsher, with themselves. And when you hear how some people speak to their family or peers, it really makes me wonder what they must be saying to themselves.
Most self talk is either questions or statements. It’s them asking themselves questions or casting judgments on X.
The question I ask is around the quality of those questions and statements are they useful and empowering or un-useful and destructive?
Remember your brain is one of the most powerful computers in existence. It has an exponentially massive data base of possibilities and stored information. But, as when using a search engine on the internet, if you type in the wrong question, that search engine will give you thousands if not millions, of wrong unsupportive and unhelpful answers.
Even the tone of voice that a person might use with themselves is important. The volume, pitch and speed. Angry, name calling condescending, victimized or confident. All of these resonate and have meaning, within a persons mind.
Some people are very hard on themselves, you’ll hear them say things like; “I’m dumb,”
“I always get it wrong,” “ I’m useless,” “Why is this happening to me”
These kinds of affirmations especially if said with real passion are very destructive and reinforce any existing disempowering beliefs.
Whoever said, that sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me, didn’t quite get it right.
A question I ask is; if you had a friend who talked to you, the way you talk to you, would you still be their friend?
Most people would answer no.
Yet they keep doing it to themselves, and it feeds their dislike of themselves &
erodes their self esteem and potential.
Lastly; and at first glance this may seem a bit odd, But I ask “who’s voice” do they hear? Is it their voice, is it Mum’s voice, Is it Dad’s, or is it someone else who was important to you when you were growing up?
If what you hear them saying is useful, great, but if its not….
Here’s a question for all of the Parents out there. Have you every caught yourself saying something to your kids, that your parents said to you as a kid, that you promised yourself, you would never say?
I teach people how to tip the balance back in their favor and those results are reflected in their day to day experiences, the achievement of their goals and their quality of life.
Back to Decision Making
Let’s come all the way back to decision making. We’ve talked about how all of these things influence our decisions, so decision making is a key ingredient right!
So the question has to be asked,
If I make better decisions will I get more of what I want?
The answer is, Yes and No.
Yes because good decision making is a key ingredient, and Yes because better decision making generally leads to better results and No because our decision making is greatly influenced and guided by what we already believe to be true and how we store and organize those beliefs.
In other words, what we imagine we are capable or incapable of. And if those thoughts and feelings aren’t useful and supportive, THAT’S where most people get stuck!
Or they get to a “Point of Choice” where they can go either left or right and instead of making a clean decision, they make an automatic decision based on their existing rules.
