Imagine Meeting Yourself in 30 Years Time…

I did an exercise many years ago in the course of another self development / business coaching program whereby the instructor set the scene (in your mind) where you walk into a dark room, the tone is somber and you see all of your friends and relatives and loved ones there…. he then goes on to describe that you are looking at your own funeral…. and you sit back and observe what people have to say about you as a person, the life you led, the fun you had and the effect you had on people over the course of your life….  It is a very powerful and sometimes, for some, quite traumatic way to take stock and realize what you do tomorrow and the day after that and so on for the rest of your life will indeed end up being your life - the sum total of your experiences and influence on others.

David Martin in the context of the Going for Gold Personal Development Program has got a much nicer, somewhat gentler way to go about the same thing.

He calls the exercise “Meeting the Wiser You”.

With his permission, I’ve decided to post an excerpt from that exercise here today so you get a taste of what this is like….

“Exercise Three: The Wiser You

Imagine that you are sitting on a park bench. It’s a perfect day, just perfect.

And while you are sitting there, a very elegant elderly person comes and sits respectfully beside you. And as you observe them, you notice how well dressed, and well groomed, they are, quiet yet confident, there is an air of charisma and charm about them, that unmistakable calm that comes from someone who has lead a full and rewarding life. They are happy.

And as you are looking at them now, they turn to face you with a smile, and in that moment, you realize, that they are “the you” that you are destined to become.

Greet each other warmly; as two old and dear friends greet each other, it’s good to be friends with yourself, isn’t it.

Then after a time, ask them questions about their life and write down the answers”

You get to ask them about what regrets they had, their successes, what they were most proud of,what they had wished they had done and what they would do again if they could have had their time again…..

I put this post together today as when I did module one of the course, this really reinforced for me the importance of taking action every day, of taking absolute responsibility for who I am and moreover who I really want to become. It certainly helps greatly with your motivation when you understand why it is we drive ourselves (and how we can more effectively drive ourselves) towards all that the future can have instore for us. It had a profound impact on my thinking and this was just one exercise, out of the first module of the six week course!
