Avoid the 7 Fatal Errors that Lead to Failure!

In my research over the last 20 plus years, one of the many questions that I have studied is:

“How is it that some people seem to get extraordinary results in the areas that are important to them, while being within the very same culture, market, family or environment, as others who seem to be getting very ordinary results or in many cases the exact opposite results, by comparison?”

One of the first things that struck me during that investigation was that in every single case, that there wasn’t a direct relationship between the casual surface observations that most people might make of a person such as; between whether they were born into a wealthy family or a poor family. Nor between whether they were good looking or not or even whether they were well educated or not.

During my research I’ve met plenty of people who started off poor; weren’t what society might label as particularly physically attractive and certainly didn’t graduate from Yale, and yet have become very wealthy in terms of financial security and freedom (if we were to use monetary wealth as a measurement). And are very successful in terms of business and relationships and parenting and sports or whatever it was important to them to be “excellent” in.

And I’ve also met just as many people who were born with talents and good looks or into wealth and yet their life is a disaster area of relationships gone sour, money lost, and opportunities wasted.

When you boil it all down and distill the results of my findings what is revealed is that there are 7 fundamental fatal errors that if people can avoid them most of the time, will more likely ensure, if not guarantee their success in life, love, financial freedom and in fact any area of life that is important to them.

Now when I say avoid them most of the time I mean that none of these “Successful” models were the ideal of the prefect person.
None of them led gifted lives where they never made a mistake or where everything they touched turned to gold or where everyone everywhere loves and adores them.
That’s just simply not the case and perhaps that’s one of the things that the casual observer looking from the outside in might be forgiven for thinking, that they are somehow perfect. But to think that, is in and of itself a fatal error. The reality is that they are human, and as such they are as susceptible to human frailty and human error as anyone else is.

Of course the mental trap in making the assumption that these seemingly perfect people are indeed perfect.
May result in making the distance between the observer’s situation and the models, appear even wider and maybe even more intimidating and un attainable.

There is however a pivot point. What I mean by that is that my research uncovered a way of “being” that gave these success models more “life leverage” than the vast majority who do not use this particular way of being. This key fact alone is one of the “secrets” to the mystery to gaining real, tangible and sustainable success.

Where the “average person” (and I use that word purely as a way of providing contrast not as a way of labeling a person or population) may feel positive about their purpose and direction in life say 50% of the time. The success models would feel positive, even in the absence of evidence, about 70% of their time.

That one fact alone, gives them a 20% advantage over the “average person.” That 20% is accumulating everyday that they feel that way, in the same way that the law of compounding interest works on saved money. That means that every day over time, that successful person is likely to become 20% more successful every day every week every month every year than the person who is only feeling positive 50% of the time. And that compounding effect spread over a lifetime cements into an exponentially rich seemingly “lucky”advantage.

Now if we go to the opposite extreme and think for a moment about a person who may only feel positive about themselves and their life say 20 % of the time and therefore by definition feels “bad” 80% of the time.
Will naturally attract and experience that same compounding effect, but in a downward spiraling way. This means that their day to day life experience is going to accumulate exponentially; a less than rewarding or fulfilling way of life.

THE 7 FATAL ERRORS REVEALLED

FATAL ERROR No 1
They focus on problems instead of desired outcomes.
That means they focus on what they can’t have and on what they can’t do “because.”

That means that they predominantly only see obstacles that they then, in their opinion don’t have the personal resources to overcome. This belief then directs the majority of their energy into “That won’t work” or “I couldn’t do that” or “I tried that once and it didn’t work” or “It’s different here.” That attitude impacts on what they will try or attempt, how they come across to others and on how they feel and perform.

FATAL ERROR No 2
They ask the wrong questions.
For example they ask “Why” instead of “How.”
“Why” questions very often leads to blame and justifications and victim centered thinking for example the common question of “why does this always happen to me?” will indeed stimulate your brain into providing a dozen un helpful and confidence destroying answers that seldom leads anywhere useful.
By contrast “How” questions like “How do successful people think, behave, focus, prepare, learn and engage?”
Will lead the Questioner, to a far more resourceful & compelling place.

FATAL ERROR No 3
If it doesn’t work they believe they have failed.
What this means is that they have so much emotionally invested in the outcome that if it doesn’t work, they feel crushed, embarrassed, want to run and hide, frustrated or helpless, giving up on their dream and try not to stand out ever again.

Instead of seeing it for what it really is.
Vital Feedback that they can use to their advantage to learn and grow and adjust until they get what they want.

FATAL ERROR No 4
They focus on “necessities” instead of on “possibilities.”
What I mean here is that their thoughts are monopolized by “should” & “shouldn’t” and “have to’s” which trend to create heavy de-motivating feelings of obligation rather than the feelings of excitement and adventure that accompanies a mental focus on “possibilities”.

FATAL ERROR No 5
They get bored.
Allowing your self to become bored and then staying bored can result in two common outcomes.
One: They lose momentum and drive for what they want to achieve and then stop doing the things that would naturally lead to success.
Two: They look for excitement somewhere else which takes them even further away from their goal and more often than not, gets them into trouble.

FATAL ERROR No 6
They act as if success is not likely or even expected.
Because they don’t really believe success is likely they don’t prepare properly. They don’t learn their subject well enough. They don’t communicate their needs resourcefully and they don’t “act as if” they expect to succeed. As a consequence they often back away from the things that would assist, enable and support them in their success.

FATAL ERROR No 7
They Project these fatal errors in everything they do.
They project an image of “I don’t care” or “you can’t make me” or “It doesn’t matter anyway.” It’s their way of protecting themselves in case it all falls over. In short, they don’t back themselves with the attitude or the behavior of someone who believes in their goal. And this expression is what everyone around them “sees” as being them.

My research & my work with helping people to achieve 2 times, 3 times, 4 times even 6 times their last years income.
Having coached people to perform at their very best in business, sport and many other areas tells me that success in any given field regardless of who they are or what they do, can be greatly accelerated when a person is able to consistently; not 100% of the time but at lest 70% of the time, avoid these 7 Fatal Errors.
This means that “Success” is definable, in other words it can be mapped and you can be taught to read that map. It is predictable, that means that as the map holder you can pick the path and anticipate your needs. It is repeatable that means you can control it and direct it. And it is sustainable, that means that you can enjoy a life time of success, regardless of what age you are when you pick this process up, regardless of where you are in your life, success becomes a daily choice and not a blurry distant wish.

Thanks David. These are rules to live by. Will be positive 80% of the time from now on - just to be on the safe side! I don’t EVER want to be “average”
